2020 Maverick Chardonnay

This single-vineyard Chardonnay, from Maverick Vineyard in the Yamhill-Carlton AVA in Willamette Valley, has a delicate texture and tight focus, exemplifying the uniqueness of the marine sedimentary soils of the site.  This wine stayed in barrel for 16 months and was left unfined and unfiltered.  In its youth the wine requires some air, eventually revealing aromas of Bartlett pear, Honeydew melon, briny oyster shell and Meyer lemon.  The palate has layers of orchard fruits and a noteworthy minerality.  The wine at first pour is somewhat austere, but eventually gains roundness and mid-palate weight supported by bright acidity.  Lay this one down for a few more years to enjoy its full potential.   –  N.B.

The 2020 Chardonnay Maverick, sourced from vineyards across the border in Oregon, wafts up with pretty floral perfumes complicated by flint-crushed rocks and yellow apple tones. This is silky and pliant, yet also nicely lifted with cooling minerality and a note of young pear. The 2020 finishes with a pleasant grip, as gingery spices and honeyed florals slowly fade.

Pairing Suggestion

Homemade Spaghetti with Sunflower Seed Pasta, Spring Onion, English Peas and Pecorino — Chardonnay pairs well with meaty fish such as halibut, cod, or shellfish. Risottos, cream-enhanced soups and pastas also are terrific accompaniments for Chardonnay.

Behind the Wine

2020 Maverick Chardonnay

Desire for discovery and endless curiosity are integral to the philosophy of winemaking at DeLille. The ambitious challenge in the cellar is to improve constantly through continuous experimentation with winemaking techniques, vineyard sources and wine styles. In Oregon, Chardonnay quality continues to improve as viticultural practice adapts to the region’s relatively cool, short growing season, producing bright, complex wines. Our Maverick Vineyard Chardonnay is sourced from a single block, planted in marine sedimentary soils.
